Don’t go TMI on Your Lawn Sign

Everyone has heard of the acronym TMI. Usually, it’s said by a friend, a family member, a coworker, or even someone online when you have told them something that they really didn’t want to hear. Probably you have said it too, right? However, although a little TMI is bad at any time, it’s especially bad when it refers to a lawn sign. Below are some of the reasons why having TMI on a lawn sign is just a really bad idea.

No One Has Time to Read All That on a Lawn Sign

Let’s face it. People are passing by your lawn sign usually in a car unless they are walking on the sidewalk. But even then, they don’t want to stand there and read a novel, So, either way, you want to keep things short. Otherwise, they aren’t going to have the time to read all the information on the sign. That means they’re going to miss the good stuff.

People go into Information Overload due to Your Lawn Sign

Now I’ve never personally been to Vegas. But I’ve been to Disney World, and I love it. However, there is SO MUCH to look at. You feel like you need to have eyes all around your head, plus a couple of extra brains to process it all sometimes. Now, imagine everything in Disney World squeezed into a lawn sign. That’s what happens when you put a lot of stuff on one lawn sign. The people seeing it go into information overload mode. Even people without ADHD are going to have trouble processing it all. So, do them and yourself a favor and don’t go all TMI on your sign. It won’t end well, believe me.

The Important Stuff on Your Lawn Sign Gets Lost

What is the most important thing for people to take away from your lawn sign? Are you advertising a sale? Are you introducing yourself to the community? Tell them that and tell them how to get in touch. If you have lots of cool graphics and things like Buy Now, Big Sale, 50% Off, Store closing, New Location and they’re all in one sign, things are going to get muddied. Choose the most important thing that needs to be on your sign and put it there, along with the phone number or another short message. That’s it.

Think of it this way. When there’s too much information, people often get no information because they either:

  • Don’t have time to read
  • Get overwhelmed
  • Can’t read the important stuff
